The safest place for online banking is at home over a secure wi-fi network. But you may be surprised that some private internet connections are not actually that private — including your own. Instead of leaving your internet security vulnerable to hackers and thieves, you should consider how to secure your home wifi network.
SSID
Your Service Set Identifier (SSID) is the technical term for your personal wi-fi network. By default, it is viewable to any nearby wireless-enabled device scanning for a network connection.
You have the ability to hide it, however, and should. This will make it harder for a hacker to know what router type you have, reducing the chance of attack.
Authorized users and guests could still connect with your network by searching for the specific SSID you provide.
Never Use the Default Password
By changing the default passwords for both your network and administrator, you’ll make it more difficult for hackers to gain control of your router and internet connections. Creating a long password with random characters is the best way to secure your home wifi network.
Immediately Encrypt Your Network
As soon as your broadband provider installs the router, look at your network settings and check the wireless properties. Then, disable the default and select to encrypt your network. Encryption secures your online safety and establishes an authentication protocol that keeps unauthorized users from accessing your network or sensitive data.
Keep Your Router Up to Date
Always register your router so you are informed of any updates from the manufacturer. This way when newer versions of the software become available, you can easily download them. This will install patches for any weak spots in the previous software, making your network less vulnerable to hackers. Conversely, not updating your router can expose security flaws, putting your home wifi network at risk.
By following these basic precautions, you can make your mobile banking experience safer and less vulnerable at home.
