Officer Terry Bennett of the Washington Metropolitan Police Department was a pillar of the Washington, D.C. community. In addition to nearly eight years of service with the MPD, he was a beloved husband, son, father, mentor, and football coach.
On Tuesday, December 23,2025, Officer Bennett was assisting a motorist on I-695 when he was tragically struck by a drunk driver. As a result of the blunt force trauma he sustained, Officer Bennett passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. Officer Bennett will be remembered as a man who dedicated his life to public service.
Even in death, he continued to be a hero as an organ donor. After Officer Bennet passed away, his wife, Nadia, arranged a life-saving kidney transplant for 21-year-old college senior Maya Pinson.
Officer Bennett grew up in Southeast D.C. He is a graduate of Ballou Senior High School and Bucknell University. Bennett went on to become an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for Ballou’s football team prior to becoming an officer with the MPD.
His passing marks the 127th line-of-duty death in the MPD’s 164-year history. As a tribute to Officer Bennett and his legacy, July 21, his birthday, will henceforth be recognized as Terry Bennett Day in Washington D.C. He is survived by his wife, three-year-old son, parents, five siblings, a grandmother, five uncles, three aunts, three nieces, and six nephews along with many other relatives, friends, and loved ones.
On behalf of the staff and members of Police Federal Credit Union, we thank Officer Bennett for his service and honor his sacrifice.
